Your smartphone as a key: In collaboration with Ideenmanufaktur Berlin, we are currently working flat out to complete the locking system control system for the Prima Resort Boddenblick.

Since the beginning of the year, the devsuit team has been working with Ideenmanufaktur Berlin to develop a customized technical solution for managing access control systems. Commissioned by Prima, a project developer based in Neuruppin, the system will be implemented at the Premium Camping & Tiny House Resort Boddenblick starting in May 2024.

Goal: Complete system integration

The core concept is based on the idea of independent system components and custom interfaces.

To implement this approach, our team did not rely on standard software from hardware manufacturers, but instead designed and developed the logic and control devices ourselves. In collaboration with the Berlin-based agency Ideenmanufaktur, we created a software interface to our client’s property management system and the switching control for all standard locking systems on the market. This makes our clients 100% independent of hardware and software providers.

Independence from manufacturers

Why develop our own solution?
There are two main reasons: independence and flexibility. Leading manufacturers of access control systems offer their own software solutions: doors, barriers, and turnstiles can be opened with a smartphone, and in some cases, there are even interfaces to property management software (PMS) solutions. As a customer, however, you are generally locked into their ecosystems and cannot respond flexibly to individual requirements. 

Our in-house solution makes our customers independent of both hardware and software providers, because the universal approach—featuring our own small control units for the locking system on one hand, and integration with our own QR code system and mobile app on the other—delivers 100% independence in both areas. 

What hardware (access control system) is required for this?
Any system capable of processing electronic control signals or communicating with third-party systems via an HTTP API can be used as the access control system, which applies to at least 90% of the systems available on the market. For the Prima Resort Boddenblick, barriers from the Dutch manufacturer Camperclean are used, among others. 

What software (property management system) is required for this?
Any system that has a public API can be used as the software.

The technology behind it: Raspberry Pi and MicroPython

For our fully integrated control module, we use optical QR code readers, microcontrollers, and Raspberry Pi modules as local hubs. The programming language used on the microcontrollers is MicroPython—a language based on Python 3 that has been specifically optimized for this purpose. A Dockerized API based on FastAPI runs on the Raspberry Pi. Thanks to this universal approach, new modules can be adapted very quickly and the associated hardware made ready for use.
