API development process

Requirements analysis

We start by gaining a precise understanding of your app ideas, user paths and data sources. Specifically, we record what information your mobile app (React Native or Capacitor) needs and when, how often it retrieves it and what should happen offline. This results in a picture of the most important endpoints (the "doors" to the interface), the desired response times and the error cases that we want to elegantly intercept.

Together, we define service promises (e.g. "response in X ms" or "this many requests per minute"). We also clarify everything to do with data protection (GDPR) and security: Who can see what? Which data is sensitive? What roles and authorizations do we need? We check existing systems such as ERP, CMS, PIM, payment or identity providers and determine where data is generated and who owns it.

To ensure that nothing is overlooked, we collect risks and assumptions (for example: "This third-party API has strict limits"). The result is a prioritized API backlog - a sorted list of the most important tasks and endpoints that will quickly deliver tangible benefits for your mobile app.

Concept & Architecture

Based on the analysis, we design an easily understandable and expandable architecture. We often use REST (the standard for many interfaces) or GraphQL (a flexible query language that allows apps to get exactly the data they need). For the app, we often use a BFF - Backend for Frontend: a thin layer specifically for your mobile app that bundles data from different systems and tailors it appropriately.

For security, we rely on OAuth 2.1/OIDC - a proven standard for logins. With PKCE (an additional protection mechanism) and short-lived access tokens, logins remain secure without making them unnecessarily difficult to use. Roles and authorizations ensure that everyone only sees what is really necessary. We also plan versioning (e.g. /v1, /v2) from the outset so that older app versions continue to work if something changes.

We define clear error patterns ("What happens if something goes wrong?"), fair throttling in the event of too many requests and caching so that answers are provided quickly. By observability, we mean the visibility of the system: logs, measured values and process traces that allow us to easily recognize later where things are going wrong. The end result is a clear API design with brief explanations, examples and a security concept that suits the app and your business.

Development

During implementation, we pay attention to clear endpoints, standardized responses and testable rules. We use contract tests to ensure that the app and interface refer to the same object: What is requested? What is guaranteed to be delivered? A mock server enables the app team to test early on, even if not everything is ready yet.

We work iteratively: in short sprints, we deliver functional intermediate steps, release SDKs/client libraries for React Native/Capacitor and automate the checking of quality (tests) and delivery (CI/CD). We ensure speed and a good user experience through fast server responses, sophisticated pagination (dividing large lists into easily digestible portions) and asynchronous processing in the background if something takes longer.

Security remains on board: input is checked, secret keys are securely stored and signed webhooks (callbacks from the server) prevent manipulation. With feature flags (switches for functions) and staged rollouts (publication in small groups), we bring new features into use with low risk. This makes your app more stable, faster and more useful step by step - without big-bang updates.

Hosting & Maintenance

We choose a scalable platform for operation: containers/Kubernetes or serverless, depending on requirements. The important thing is not the technology itself, but that the system is reliable, affordable and easy to operate. With infrastructure as code (the infrastructure is documented as a script), changes remain traceable and repeatable.

We set up monitoring and alerts so that we notice early on if something is getting out of hand (e.g. slower responses or increased errors) Dashboards combine the app view (e.g. crashes, loading times) with the backend view (e.g. utilization, error types). Together with service target values (SLOs - "this is how good we want to be"), we control when we optimize and where it is most beneficial.

Security and version updates, backups and recovery plans are part of everyday life. We take a cautious approach to changes to data formats or authorizations so that older app versions continue to work. We learn from usage data which endpoints are popular, where there are problems and which enhancements bring real added value (e.g. new filters, batch endpoints or better offline synchronization). This keeps interfaces and mobile backends robust in the long term - and your app can grow with peace of mind.
