Case

The demands of digital learning are growing: learners should not only absorb knowledge, but also be able to work independently and with motivation. Cornelsen was looking for a solution that combines interactive exercises with customizable design, technical reliability, and modern functionality. The goal was to create a platform that promotes independent learning, presents learning content in a varied way, and at the same time offers the ability to store and manage learning data.

Solution

In collaboration with Cornelsen and its design partner Framefield, devsuit developed a comprehensive system for interactive exercises. This system not only boosts student motivation but also ensures efficient and sustainable integration into the daily school routine through customized features.

Custom exercise formats and design:

Instead of relying on generic templates, interactive exercise formats were developed specifically for Cornelsen. These include multiple-choice questions, matching exercises, fill-in-the-blank texts, and other variations that use custom design and animations to present learning content in an engaging and intuitive way. The focus was on creating a varied and motivating learning environment.

Technical foundation and integration:

The exercises were implemented using modern web technologies such as JavaScript, HTML5, and LESS to ensure optimal performance and responsiveness. TinCan (xAPI) was used as the standard for exchanging learning content, allowing the interactive exercises to be seamlessly integrated into existing systems. A Learning Record Store (LRS) was used to store and evaluate learning activities in detail.

Stand-alone player:

A central component of the solution was the development of a standalone player. This not only enables the interactive exercises to be played but also allows for the management of school classes and the storage of individual learning progress. Teachers can thus track their classes’ progress in detail and provide personalized feedback.

Gamification and User-Friendliness:

To boost learner motivation, playful elements such as rewards, progress bars, and interactive feedback mechanisms were integrated. Intuitive user guidance ensures that even younger learners can easily navigate the system and work independently.

Quality assurance through cross-browser testing:

To ensure the platform functions flawlessly on all common devices and browsers, devsuit relied on automated testing with Jenkins. This guarantees high stability and user-friendliness, regardless of users’ technical setups.

Close collaboration with the publishing house’s editorial teams ensured that the exercises meet the highest standards not only in terms of technology and design but also in terms of pedagogy.

Results

  • Promoting independent learning: Interactive and engaging exercises give learners the freedom to work at their own pace.
  • High technical reliability: Automated testing ensures stability across all devices and browsers.
  • Seamless integration: TinCan (xAPI) and the Learning Record Store enable easy integration with existing learning management systems.
  • Engaging learning environment: Customized design and gamification elements boost motivation to learn.
  • Sustainable Learning Management: The standalone player makes it easier to save and track learning progress and helps teachers organize their classes.
  • Time to market: By using popular charting libraries, we can release the product in just a few weeks.
